The Surrey Hills

The Surrey Hills National Landscape (AONB) is widely considered the spiritual home of mountain biking in the South East. Spanning the North Downs and the Greensand Ridge, it offers a playground of sandy singletrack, technical root sections, and heart-pumping climbs—all within striking distance of London.

Unlike a purpose-built trail centre with color-coded waymarking, the Surrey Hills relies on a mix of public bridleways and a vast network of “off-piste” trails maintained by a dedicated local community.

The “Big Three” hills—Holmbury, Pitch, and Leith—form the core of the riding scene. They are often linked together for an epic day in the saddle. For something a little more technical, we incorporate the well known trails across Winterfold.

Such is the network of trails that are spreadout across the hills, it can be difficult to piece a flowing ride together for newcomers. Let us guide you and take the stress out of knowing where to go and what the trails are like.

1. Holmbury Hill

This is perhaps the most famous of the trio, known for its flowy, high-speed descents.

  • Barry Knows Best (BKB): The undisputed king of Surrey trails. It’s a fast, flowing descent with berms and rollers that makes every rider feel like a pro.

  • Yogurt Pots: A series of deep, rhythmic “dips” that feel like a pump track carved into the woods.

  • Telegraph Row: A classic, high-speed singletrack through the trees. The alternative ending is perfect for working on your corning techniques.

  • Jerk Chicken: A fast fun flowing trail suitable for all levels of riders. You’ll love it so much you’ll want a second lap,

  • Reggae Sauce: The neighbour to Jerk Chicken  running just a few metres away but a whole different experience. One the guides favourites.
  • Secret Squirrel: a blast through a tight rocky entrance before intersecting with Telegraph Row and dropping into a twisting technical descent towards Holmbury St Mary.
2. Pitch Hill

Pitch / Pitch Steeps offers a slightly more “raw” feel than Holmbury, with more roots and steeper sections.

  • Supernova: A fast, twisting descent that requires good line choice.

  • The T-Trails (T1, T2, etc.): A series of technical, root-heavy trails that test your suspension and your nerves.

  • Curly Wurly: A tight, winding trail that lives up to its name.

  • John The Baptist (Rollercoaster): One of the longest trails on Pitch Hill and one that constantly evolves.

  • Bagpuss: off the southside of the hill, a fast entry leads to a series of tight corners increasing in gradient and tech, before snaking across the side of the hill
3. Leith Hill

As the highest point in South East England, Leith Hill offers the longest climbs and most rewarding views.

  • Summer Lightning: The official, waymarked red-graded trail. It’s a rugged 8.5km loop that starts near the iconic Leith Hill Tower.

Refreshments and Bike Hire

Mid ride refreshments / water bottle top ups can be had at the Hurtwood Hideout, located at the bottom of the Telegraph Row trail. The Hideout is also the perfect location to start and finish any midweek rides in the warmer months and serves at the starting location for Night Rides.

Just Pedal have their off-road bike hire hub located at the hideout, and run a series of social community rides across the hills.

Away from the Hideout, The Riders Hub has a large selection of eMTBS from Specialized or Trek for rental alongside a well stocked shop for all your MTB needs located opposite the Hurtwood Inn, it is perfectly situated for both Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill trails.
